Meditation For Stress Relief
A few years ago if you had asked me do I recommend meditation for stress relief, I would probably have laughed at you and dismissed the very idea as some sort of psycho-nonsense. Thankfully I have become a bit more open-minded as I have gotten older and allowed myself to take a closer look at many things that I would have never considered when I was younger.
I suppose with my scientific background as a pharmacist I have always looked for facts and proof that things worked rather than trusting that some things can’t actually be fully explained. There are many alternative remedies and relaxation techniques which I have found to be very useful tools in the battle against stress and in this article I want to tell you a bit more about one that has become a bit of a favourite of mine!
Meditation For Stress Relief
No one said stress was easy. In fact, if you ask most people, you will find a common theme. Today, more than ever, people are facing large amounts of stress. However, figuring out how to relieve this stress can be a challenge. But it doesn’t have to be, especially when meditation is such a great tool. And what’s more, it’s free, easy to learn and one of the most effective ways of all to calm your thoughts and allow you to see things in a different light.
When you begin to feel the pressures of life building within you, it’s easy to get uptight. But don’t fret. It is important to remember that there are many techniques you can use to keep your stress to a minimum. When life’s pressures get too high, they can trigger a physical response, which can cause just about anything from high blood pressure to digestive problems.
Experts have also discovered that high stress levels can also cause a condition which is called stress illness. Stress illness is the body’s physical response to the fight or flight response. This then triggers physical reactions. Many people visit the doctor only to find that there is nothing physically wrong with them. If you find yourself feeling this way, hold tight. Meditation for stress is a great way to help your body relax and reverse some of the damage that can be done by the harmful effects of the stress hormones.
Meditation Unleashes The Power Of Your Mind
The mind is a powerful weapon in the battle with stress so use it to your advantage. What many people don’t realize is that meditation can begin with your body. If you take time to stretch and loosen your joints, you will be able to better focus on a relaxing thought or object.
The difficult thing about stress is that it causes you to focus on a situation or problem that makes the body tense up. To combat this, in your mind’s eye, envision something that brings you pleasure, whether it’s a loved one or a vacation spot. As you bring the object into focus, imagine what you would say to the person or what you would do, if you were in that vacation spot right now. Feel the wind on your face. Breathe in the sea air. Immerse yourself in this world.
Really allow yourself to embrace the mental picture of how this will feel and it will become almost real in your mind. Releasing your thought focus from the cause of your stress can really help take that first big step away from the whole negativity of your stressful experience.
When you use meditation for stress as a stress management technique, you give the mind a brief vacation from your normally hectic life. When caught up in a stressful situation, your whole body propels into overdrive. Slow down this response by focusing on a sound that brings you comfort. It could be a song that brings you peace or a sound from nature.
Stress experts recommend keeping your mind focused on a sound. Not only does this help you drown out stressful thoughts, but it allows you to relax your body. In the long run, relaxing will make you feel better and improve your physical health. You will begin to see physical changes, such as lower blood pressure and a better attitude overall!
Take as long as you need. When you’re stressed, it’s easy to be pulled from a pleasant thought and back to a stressful one. This makes you rush through stress management techniques, so you can focus on the problem at hand. This can be a problem, which ultimately heightens your stress levels. This is why it’s so important to take your time when meditating to relieve stress.
Take a stress management seminar. Stress management seminars give you the opportunity to network with others and recreate situations that cause stress. However, they are also a great way to meditate on stressful situations and find ways to cope with them.
A lot of seminars give you the opportunity to gather in groups and think about a stressful situation, meanwhile envisioning ways to deal with it. Not only does this prepare you for this type of situation, but it gives you an opportunity to focus on a relaxing thought that will help you cope.

Guided meditation for stress relief uses a pre-recorded audio or video in which a meditation expert actually talks you through a session of meditation. To give you some idea of how powerful and effective this can be you should watch the following video. To get the best results I recommend you find a quiet time and place and then play the video. You are really going to be amazed at how relaxed and stress-free you feel afterwards.

I got lucky to be introduced to meditation using Thai Chi as a young pup by my Uncle Tom. The physical and breathing exercise could take away all the outside stress and allow a calm and focus that helped in school and really helped my artwork. Now later in life I have lost touch with those roots but will definitely be seeking meditation again to help with my mental illness including bi-polar and social anxiety.
Hi Andy
Yes meditation forms a part of a number of other practices including Thai Chi and Yoga and is a great way to clear the mind of negative thoughts and allow your creative juices to flow.
I’m sorry to hear of your struggles with mental illness but you are definitely right to incorporate meditation into your treatment plan and I wish you lots of success with it.
Best wishes
